Join our lively book group to discuss this month’s pick: ‘Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back’ by Janice Nimura. This is a biography of the extraordinary journey of five young girls sent by the Japanese government to the United States in 1871 to learn Western ways and return to help nurture a new generation of enlightened men to lead Japan. Raised in traditional samurai households in Japan, they were greeted as celebrities upon their arrival in San Francisco. Over the next decade, they lived as typical American schoolgirls, forming strong bonds with their host families and new friends. When they returned to Japan, much had changed and their focus then was to revolutionize women’s education in their homeland.

April 17th — Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan. This historical novel paints a cinematic picture of life in Brooklyn during WWII as a young girl seeks to uncover the mystery behind her father’s disappearance.
